چکیده

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a partnership relationship with the asphalt paving and roofing industries and their associated unions. Our partners saw in the EHP Focus article “Paving Paradise: The Peril of Impervious Surfaces” (Frazer 2005) the statement on page A459: “Asphalt is one concern, as it contains coal tar pitch, a recognized human carcinogen .... ” Our partners asked us if we could help them address this statement. By definition, asphalt is a petroleum product and contains no coal tar. However, some pavement-repair products and sealants may contain coal tar. NIOSH did not find any evidence of coal tar in U.S. asphalt in our hazard review Health Effects of Occupational Exposure to Asphalt (NIOSH 2000. The author declares he has no competing financial interests.

Long-term clearance kinetics of inhaled ultrafine insoluble iridium particles from the rat lung, including transient translocation into secondary organs.

Recently it was speculated that ultrafine particles (UFP) may translocate from deposition sites in the lungs to systemic circulation and whether long-term clearance differs between ultrafine and micrometer-sized particles. We have studied lung retention and clearance kinetics in 12 healthy male adult WKY rats up to 6 mo after an inhalation of (192)Ir-radiolabeled, insoluble, ultrafine 15- to 20...

Direct evidence for coastal iodine particles from Laminaria macroalgae – linkage to emissions of molecular iodine

Renewal of ultrafine aerosols in the marine boundary layer may lead to repopulation of the marine distribution and ultimately determine the concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Thus the formation of nanometre-scale particles can lead to enhanced scattering of incoming radiation and a net cooling of the atmosphere. The recent demonstration of the chamber formation of new particles f...

Nanoparticle Emissions from Engines

Recently concerns about possible increases in emissions of ultrafine and nanoparticles and their environmental impact have been voiced. A major problem with assessing the significance of such emissions is that, unlike the carbonaceous soot particles associated with older Diesel engines, many of these particles are not formed in the engine but instead by gas-to-particle conversion processes from...

Ultrafine Particles Cross Cellular Membranes by Nonphagocytic Mechanisms in Lungs and in Cultured Cells

High concentrations of airborne particles have been associated with increased pulmonary and cardiovascular mortality, with indications of a specific toxicologic role for ultrafine particles (UFPs; particles < 0.1 microm). Within hours after the respiratory system is exposed to UFPs, the UFPs may appear in many compartments of the body, including the liver, heart, and nervous system. To date, th...
